Mongrel lover Ashley Hart wants to share some delicious ideas for your pooches. Why not to treat your dog to a healthy doggie burger or a big pot of wellness?
For doggie burgers or just a big pot use three equal parts for each batch: (if you want to make any recipe into doggie burgers just add egg to the mix and roll into patties before baking)
1) Lentils or rice as the base
2) Veggies- anything except for tomatoes, depending on what your dog likes you can puree the veggies or just roughly chop and mix in the pot.
3) Turkey, chicken or fish- minced or finely chopped
Cook the meat with sunflower or hemp oil on a frying pan and add chopped garlic, rosemary, basil or whatever flavors you want to flavor the meat (Ashley always uses a lot of garlic for 1 cup of meat, she adds a couple of bulbs of garlic which has many health benefits and her dogs love it).
Steam the veggies or if they are frozen just warm them up – cook the rice or lentils and drain. Then mix everything together. You can throw in spinach or kale at the end and let it wilt into the mix. You can play with what you have and see what your pooch likes.
Just try and match your fibre and veggies to the amount of meat you use and check with your vet if you see any weight gain or loss. Always check your ingredients online before adding something you have never used before.
